Understanding surrogacy

Surrogacy is a reproductive method where a woman carries and gives birth to a baby for another person or couple who will become the child’s parents. This process is often pursued when natural conception is not possible due to various medical reasons. There are two primary types of surrogacy:

Gestational surrogacy.

The egg from the intended mother or an egg donor is fertilized with sperm from the intended father or a sperm donor through in vitro fertilization (IVF). The resulting embryo is implanted into the surrogate, who then carries and delivers the baby. The surrogate has no genetic connection to the child.

Traditional surrogacy.

The surrogate mother uses her own egg, which is fertilized by sperm from the intended father or a sperm donor through artificial insemination. In this scenario, the surrogate is the biological parent of the child. IVF is not used in traditional surrogacy.
